Mains

The main part of the upsc ias exams is mainly mains, hence named so. The most crucial juncture is marks in mains exam. If you got enough marks in it , then the chance of landing in a service is very very high. With the interview marks being reduced further, importance of mains has climbed.

In this post i will describe how the answer writing in mains is different from the most familiar method. In most schools and colleges, rote learning is very common. The teachers teach some answers, the students vomit it in the exam. The guy gets high marks. Teacher is happy, student is happy :-) Hurraaay. He passes out as brilliant student with high marks.

This process of rote learning and reproduction continues for years and years till the person finally graduates. Now while he is an aspirant, he tends to repeat the same style. This is one of the major causes for failure. Many aspirants used to come up with cooked up answers and paint it in the exam. That doesn’t work anymore.

At school
Learning>Recollecting>Writing

At Upsc civil service exams
Learning>Transforming information at hand>Writing

Transforming information at hand isn’t simple recollection. You gotta analyse info at hand. Then elaborate /reduce/ twist/gasify information to match your needs. The questions asked would not be direct in upsc. You would have to adapt your information accordingly to suit the question. Here what you write “is the answer”. The whole concept is based on understanding the matter and writing it according to context. In mains even if you don’t know the answer, still you gotta write!

A series of articles has been added which would help you to write better answers. You can reach them by searching blog archives
